CHAPTER EIGHT

When Macy woke up and made the first move of the day, swinging her legs over the side of the bed to get up, she was instantly reminded of yesterday’s workout.

“Oh, man,” she groaned, wincing. The pain wasn’t bad, it just reminded her of muscles that she’d long forgotten about. “Today is going to be a light day.”

She did the stretches that Jaz taught her, along with some light exercises, using her own body weight for resistance, and was amazed that she felt better afterward.

“Wow, that’s crazy,” she murmured to Dex, who sat on her foot, peering at her as she did her crunches. “Doing more exercise made the pain go away. What sorcery is that?”

After a healthy breakfast that she actually enjoyed – a hard boiled egg, a piece of dry toast, and a small glass of vegetable juice – Macy headed to her office, feeling accomplished. It was a nice feeling for a change.

Dextra clawed her way up Macy’s lightweight sweatpants and hopped onto the top of the desk, where she promptly curled up and went to sleep in a beam of sunlight.

“Why can’t I be a cat?” Macy sighed, with a fond smile.

First things first, she scanned the polaroid photo that Greta had given her and input it into an identification app on her computer to see if she could find out who the mystery lady was. It was a long shot, and unfortunately, there were no matches on record. Macy considered hanging out with Polly on Tuesdays and Fridays to do a stakeout and made a mental note to mention it the next time that she saw her.

Thoughts of Polly turned to thoughts of the shelter and its current financial woes. Macy tapped a mechanical pencil lightly on her keyboard, thinking.

“Wait a minute!” She sat up taller in her chair, eyes wide. “If I use a portion of my profits to benefit the shelter, I bet that the people I networked with for the fundraiser would let me hang fliers in their shops. Let’s see, there are the groomers, the pet shops, the grocery store…” Macy thought aloud, growing more excited by the second. Dex opened her eyes partway, gazed at her human who seemed to be speaking to no one in particular, and closed her eyes again, indicating a mild annoyance with a singular flip of the tip of her tail.

Macy closed her laptop, wrapped up a sizable number of packages to take to the post office, and left the house. She dropped off her parcels on her way to the shelter, her mind still whirling with possibilities.

“Hey, Essence, hey, Sync,” she greeted her fellow volunteers, glad to see them, but disappointed that Polly wasn’t there.

“Peace to you, Macy.” Sync smiled and placed his palms together under his chin, bowing his head slightly.

Essence rolled her eyes. “Hey, Mace,” she replied, focused on the computer.

“Where’s Polly? Is she walking dogs? I thought it was supposed to be my shift,” Macy asked, glancing at her watch.

“It is.
